Natural Hair Oils and Butters

Our natural hair oils and butters condition hair and add shine without silicones or added fragrance. Most are single plant oils, so you can use one on its own or mix your own blend for pre-wash oiling, scalp massage and dry ends.

Heavier oils such as ojon and pequi coat the hair and suit thick or coarse hair. Lighter oils like jojoba, moringa, baobab, manketti and marula suit fine hair and leave less residue. Shea butter nilotica, mafura butter and tamanu butter work as a rich hair butter or as a base for homemade pomades and curl creams.

For a scented cosmetic formulation, check the suitability and dilution guidance of the chosen essential oil before blending, or try our hair and scalp kits in bundle offers.

How to Use Hair Oils and Butters

Pre-wash oiling

Warm a teaspoon or two of oil between your palms and work it through the lengths and ends, then massage a little into the scalp. Leave it for at least 30 minutes, or overnight under a wrap, then shampoo. Rich oils such as ojon and pequi often need two rounds of shampoo.

Daily finishing

One or two drops of a light oil such as jojoba, marula or moringa smooth dry ends and add shine. Rub them between your palms first and apply from the mid-lengths down, keeping the roots clean.

Butters for curls and coils

Shea butter nilotica and mafura butter soften and define thick, curly and coily hair. Many people layer water or a leave-in conditioner first, then an oil, then a butter to finish.

Match the oil to your hair

Fine or straight hair suits light oils used sparingly. Thick, coarse or very dry hair can take richer oils and butters in larger amounts.

Hair Oil FAQs

How long should I leave oil in my hair?

At least 30 minutes before washing. Many people leave rich oils in overnight.

How do I wash out a heavy oil?

Apply shampoo to dry, oiled hair before adding water, lather, then rinse and shampoo a second time.

Should I put oil on my scalp or my ends?

Both work. Ends usually need oil most, while the scalp needs only a small amount massaged in before washing.

Can I add essential oils to hair oil?

Yes. Add a few drops of an essential oil such as rosemary or lavender to a tablespoon of carrier oil for scent.
