Organic Hydrosols and Floral Waters
Hydrosols, also called floral waters or hydrolats, are the aromatic water collected when plants are steam-distilled for their essential oil. They hold the water-soluble parts of the plant, so the scent is softer than an essential oil but suitability for facial use depends on the individual product’s directions.
Our range includes neroli hydrosol from bitter orange blossom, plus geranium hydrosol toner, helichrysum (immortelle) hydrosol and myrrh hydrosol, alongside buddhawood and palo santo hydrosols. Spritz them on as a face mist or toner, add them to the water phase of creams and lotions, or use them to mix clay masks and freshen linen.

How to Use and Store Hydrosols
Everyday uses
Hydrosols are gentle enough to spray straight onto skin. Use them as a face mist, as a toner after cleansing, or to mix clay masks instead of plain water. They also make a light linen and pillow spray, and a few sprays refresh hair between washes.
Using hydrosols in recipes
A hydrosol can replace some or all of the water in a lotion or cream. Any homemade product that contains water needs a suitable cosmetic preservative, because water lets microbes grow. Without one, make small batches, keep them in the fridge and use them within a few days.
Keeping them fresh
Hydrosols contain no added preservatives. Keep the bottle closed, store it somewhere cool and dark, and refrigerate after opening if you can. Most keep well for 6 to 12 months. Throw away any hydrosol that turns cloudy or smells sour.

Is a hydrosol the same as floral water?
Yes. Hydrosol, floral water and hydrolat all describe the aromatic water collected during steam distillation. It is not water with essential oil mixed in.
Can I use a hydrosol every day?
Yes. Hydrosols are mild, and most people use them daily as a face mist or toner. Patch test a new one first if your skin is sensitive.
Why does my hydrosol smell different from the essential oil?
A hydrosol holds the water-soluble parts of the plant, so its scent is softer, greener and sometimes more herbal than the matching essential oil.
What bottle should I keep it in?
A dark glass bottle with a fine mist sprayer works well. Our violet glass mini bottles help keep light off the contents.
