Description
This apothecary jar 500 ml is made of dark violet glass and closes with a flat glass stopper in the same glass. It is the old pharmacy shape: straight sides, a short wide neck and a lid that lifts straight off. On a shelf it looks black. Held up to a window it shows a deep violet.

Why a violet glass apothecary jar
Light fades the colour and flattens the scent of dried plants. Clear glass lets all of it through, and amber glass cuts part of it. Violet glass blocks nearly the whole visible spectrum and passes only violet light with some ultraviolet and infrared, so it is used for light-sensitive goods that sit on open shelves. We bottle many of our own oils in violet and amber glass for the same reason, and the rest of the range is in our packaging section.
Glass also does not take on smells or react with what it holds, so the same jar can move from lavender to bath salts after a wash.
What to keep in a 500 ml glass apothecary jar

Half a liter is a middle size: larger than a spice jar, small enough for a bathroom shelf. Because the glass is so dark you cannot see the contents, so a label on the front helps.
Care
Wash by hand in warm soapy water and dry the jar fully before refilling, since moisture trapped under the stopper spoils dried goods. The violet colour is in the glass itself and does not wash off. The stopper is loose glass, so lift the jar by the body and not by the lid.

No. It is dark violet glass that looks black in normal light. You cannot see what is inside without lifting the lid.

Can it hold liquids?
The stopper lifts off and is not a screw cap, so the jar is meant to stand on a shelf and not to travel. For oils and other liquids, a bottle with a threaded cap is the safer choice.
