The details, made clear

Description

Boswellia serrata is a tree of the dry forests of central and western India. When the bark is cut, it releases a milky resin that hardens into pale tears known locally as salai guggul. Forest-dwelling communities tap and collect this resin in the dry months after the monsoon, and it is then steam-distilled. The oil is clear to pale yellow, lighter and more peppery than many African frankincense oils, and typically rich in alpha-thujene and alpha-pinene.

Details

Botanical name Boswellia serrata (Indian frankincense)
Origin India
Part used Oleo-gum resin
Extraction Steam-distilled
Aroma Fresh, peppery, piney, resinous
Ingredients 100% Boswellia serrata resin oil

Why supply varies: the resin comes from wild forest trees, each tree gives a limited amount per season, and several Indian states restrict tapping.

How to use

  1. Diffuser: add 3 to 5 drops to a diffuser with water.
  2. Body oil: add 2 to 3 drops to a tablespoon (15ml) of carrier oil, about a 1% dilution.
  3. Blending: pairs well with citrus, cedarwood and spice oils.

Essential oils are concentrated. Always dilute before use on skin, patch test first, keep away from eyes and out of reach of children, and do not take internally. If you are pregnant or nursing, check with your doctor before use.

It is one kind. Boswellia serrata is Indian frankincense. Other frankincense oils come from African and Arabian Boswellia species and smell different.

What does it smell like?

Fresh and peppery with a light pine note over a soft resin base.

Can I use it undiluted?

No. Always dilute essential oils in a carrier oil before use on skin.
