Using Dragon's Blood Extract
What it is
Dragon's blood extract, also called sangre de grado, is the deep red sap of the Croton lechleri tree. The sap is tapped from the bark in the upper Amazon in Peru, and the tree also grows wild in Ecuador and Colombia.
Its texture
The sap is a thin, dark red liquid. When rubbed between the fingers it turns pale cream, which is one of the simplest ways to recognise genuine sangre de grado.
Adding it to recipes
A few drops are enough in most recipes. Stir it into a serum, a face mask or the water phase of a cream. Start with a small test batch, because its colour can tint lighter products.
Storage and safety
Keep the bottle tightly closed, upright and away from light and heat. It is for external use only. Keep it away from the eyes and out of reach of children.
Dragon's Blood FAQs
Why is it called dragon's blood?
The name comes from the deep red colour of the sap. Sangre de grado is Spanish for blood of the dragon.
Why does it turn cream coloured on skin?
The sap changes colour as it is rubbed in and mixes with air and skin. This is normal.
What size bottle is it?
It comes in a 3.4oz (100ml) bottle.
Can I mix it with oils?
It is water-based, so it blends best into serums, masks and creams rather than pure carrier oils.
