Ojon is the name by which the oil of the American oil palm became known in hair care. In the Mosquitia region of eastern Honduras, Miskito and Tawahka families reach wild palm stands by canoe, cut the ripe bunches and carry the fruit back to the village. The kernels are cooked and skimmed by hand in small workshops, which gives raw ojon its dark brown colour and strong smoky, roasted scent. It is thick and firm when cool and melts into a smooth liquid in warm hands. It is sold here in bulk lots of 25, 50, 100 and 200 kg for makers of hair masks, oils and balms.
