Description
The carrot is a biennial of the parsley family, native to Europe and south-west Asia. Carrots grown for food are pulled in their first year, so seed comes only from plants left in the ground through winter. In their second summer they send up stems topped with flat umbels of white flowers, which ripen into small, ridged, bristly seeds. The seed is dried, threshed and cleaned, then cold-pressed. This carrier oil is golden yellow with a faint earthy, carrot-like scent. Like other carrot-family seed oils it is rich in petroselinic acid, with oleic and linoleic acids alongside.
