_Boswellia serrata_ is a tree of the dry forests of central and western India. When
the bark is cut, it releases a milky resin that hardens into pale tears known locally
as salai guggul. Forest-dwelling communities tap and collect this resin in the dry
months after the monsoon, and it is then steam-distilled. The oil is clear to pale
yellow, lighter and more peppery than many African frankincense oils, and typically
rich in alpha-thujene and alpha-pinene.
